It’s possible to do what you love while living with haemophilia
Hi , my name is Hamad and I live in gulf region. I was first introduced to football by my friend’s mother over 10 years ago, when I was 8 years old. People with haemophilia generally are not supposed to play football, as per their doctors’ and their social environment’s advice. So, when I was told that I could not play the sport I loved due to my diagnosis, it was a big emotional hit.
I started thinking about other ways to participate in football-related activities. At about 11 years old I joined a football referee programme through my patient organisation, opening the doors to the possibility of being actively involved in the game. Initially, I wore ankle and knee bandages in the field to prevent injury. It didn’t feel like much of a compromise, I was excited about the opportunity to referee then, and the excitement has continued to this day. Thanks to the local football association being in partnership with the local patient organisation, The Haemophilia Interest Group, I became a certified football referee at 13 instead of 14 years old.
It was quite difficult to talk about haemophilia with others initially, but the referee group were friendly and accepting, and that allowed me to open up to them about it. This experience helped me through today to understand the importance of being open about my condition.
